A money order is a secure, prepaid form of payment that functions similarly to a check but is considered more reliable because it’s backed by guaranteed funds. When you purchase a money order, you pay the full amount upfront, usually with cash or a debit card, along with a small fee. The issuer then provides you with a paper document that includes the payment amount and the name of the recipient. Because the money is paid in advance, the recipient can be confident that the funds are available, unlike with a personal check that might bounce. Money orders are often used when cash isn’t safe or practical, or when the payer doesn’t have a checking account. They’re commonly used for paying rent, sending money through the mail, or making secure payments to individuals or businesses. Once issued, the money order can be deposited or cashed by the recipient, and the purchaser receives a receipt for tracking or proof of payment.
