The Coverdell Education Savings Account (Coverdell ESA) was established to help a parent or legal guardian save for a child/beneficiary’s education expenses.
This is a tax-advantage savings account designed to help save for primary and secondary schools (grades k-12) as well as higher education. Contributions grow tax free and can be withdrawn without restrictions at any time if used for qualified education expenses.
Examples of qualified education expenses include:The contribution limit is $2,000 a year per child. Contributions cannot be accepted after the child/beneficiary reaches age 18, and the balance must be distributed within 30 days of the beneficiary's 30th birthday. Age restrictions may be waived for special needs beneficiaries.
